BMW Fans: “Please make this car!”

US: “Let your imagination soar!”

When it comes to the 3.0CSL concept car, BMW has put forth nothing short of amazing! A fitting tribute paying homage to the original 3.0CSL of the early 1970s, dubbed the “Batmobile,” this second version is truly a show stopper. From its racing design cues that speak to the Motorsport division to new colors and lines, the 3.0L CSL is making a grand debut…See what an exercise in design is all about!

Here’s more….

Futuristic without a doubt

While not a production car, the Hommage R has design cues that are sure to be found in future cars. For example, the future is made clear in the instrumentation, which is designed to route through to the driver’s helmet visor. Built atop the platform of a 4 Series, this concept car would definitely become a prized possession in the future if it were to become a reality.

This vehicle is surely power-packed at 500 horsepower that comes from an inline-six engine.

Doors open wide to reveal what is inside — a spacious cabin, although sliding down into the cockpit requires care due to the solid-looking carbon fibre sills that are actually wafer thin. Colors are found in the bright yellow stitching inside. The steering wheel, which is similar to what is found in the DTM racer, is a cut-down creation that pays homage to both racing car helms and motorcycle-style handlebars.

The wheel is not the only design cue similar to the racer. Although BMW’s high-quality cabins are a main draw, this concept has a cockpit that is extremely race-oriented, not providing any distractions in the least. The wooden dash echoes the original 3.0 CSL’s and M colors were also added on the ends of the wooden section.

Race-oriented is not void of style, though, with key retro touches inside that are truly eye-catching. The dash has contrasting brightwork and wood accents, and minimalist nylon loops to open the doors. There is a main information cluster, and two helmets find their place stowed behind the seats.

Exterior dominates

A vast rear wing dominates the car’s exterior form, and on each side, tiny cameras do the work of wing mirrors. Perhaps its most defining element is the way in which the wing merges with the dramatic rear arches. These are dubbed “wrapover wings,” and make the car more slippery, reduce lift and look downright good! LED lights are integrated into the wing and frame the rear of the car, giving it a calligraphic signature. Black longitudinal splitters ride the front wings, and there is a pair of rear spoilers, one at the trailing edge of the roof and partly masking the window and the other bolted to the bootlid. At front, the lights are X-themed lasers.

How it handles!

When this concept fires up, cover your ears! With the sound of a true race car, the noise is considered totally addictive! The engine is hooked up to a 4-series coupe running gear, a stock eight-speed transmission and the largest brakes Brembo could supply. While there is no word on power and torque, 500 bhp or more should be where it lands.

Steering affects changes of direction and the vast brakes bite promptly. This Hommage rides incredibly low.

Some background

The Hommage pays “homage” to the later versions of the CSL coupe, also referred to as the Batmobile! Developed from the E9 in conjunction with the Alpina, the CSL earned cult status due to its aero kit and dominance of the European Touring Car championship through the 1970s. The breed had three different iterations, including the carb-fed 180 bhp Mkl, the fuel-injected 200 bhp MkII and the 206 bhp Batmobile. The 2015 Hommage concept is inspired by the last and most extreme of the CSLs, which features a combination of top performance with lips, ducts and wings.

BMW fans are asking — “Please make this car!” and there are plenty of reasons why! With cool features, a race-car look and feel and a true exercise in design, the Hommage speaks to leading performance and leading dynamics. Pushing the limits and your imagination — see what this concept is all about!
