Available in three versions—the 28i, the 35i, and the 35is—all 2016 BMW Z4 roadsters come with numerous standard features such as LED running lights, automatic xenon headlights, and automatic wipers. The base 28i receives 17-inch alloy wheels, while the 35i rides on 18-inch wheels. The 35is also sports 18-inch wheels, but in a design unique to the model. An aerodynamic body kit is an available option on both the 28i and the 35i, while 19-inch wheels are an option on 35i models with the M Sport package.
Engine Power
It is the power plant beneath the hood that provides the most distinction between models and serves as the basis for the nomenclature. The 28i makes its power by way of a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The 35i sports a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine that cranks out an even 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. The 35is also has the turbocharged 3.0-liter under the hood, but in this application tuning has resulted in a gain of 35 additional horsepower and 32 more pound-feet of torque.
Performance
The light weight of the turbocharged 2.0-liter and its respectable power output allows the Z4 28i to go from zero to 60 miles per hour in under six seconds, while the 35i and its turbocharged 3.0-liter can make it to 60 just a bit more quickly. In 35is form, the Z4 is capable of hitting 60 in five seconds, and has active dampening sport suspension. The 28i can be had with a smooth shifting six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic transmission, which is the only option on six-cylinder models. The 28i equipped with the manual achieves an EPA estimated 26 miles per gallon (mpg) in combined city and highway driving, while those with the automatic transmission will see a slightly lower number. The 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder motor in the 35i and 35is returns an EPA estimated 20 mpg in combined driving.
Interior
The Z4 comes well-equipped with full power accessories, including power seats with driver's memory function. Power folding side mirrors and auto dimming are also standard on all models, as is the BMW iDrive infotainment system, Bluetooth connectivity, and a sound system with auxiliary inputs and HD radio. The 35i features leather upholstery, while the 35is boasts upgraded interior trim. A variety of options packages, such as the M sport package, and stand-alone options, including wheel upgrades, allow for customization.
Safety Features
In addition to standard anti-lock brakes, traction and stability controls, and side airbags, the Z4 features BMW Assist as standard equipment, which provides emergency assistance and crash notification. Parking sensors for both front and rear are an option, as are automatic high beam controls.

The 2016 BMW Z4 brings everyday livability and relative refinement to the convertible roadster segment.
