Trim Levels (Exterior)
You can choose between a sedan or wagon body style with the 3 Series. The sedan comes in four different trims, while the wagon has the option for two of the trims. The base-level 321i comes with 17-inch wheels and automatic wipers. Bump up to the 328d or the 330e sedan for many of the same features with a different engine. The 341i gets you LED headlights, a sunroof, and the M Sport package. If you choose the wagon, you can get it in the 33i xDrive trim or the 328 xDrive trim, and they both come with a panoramic sunroof, a power liftgate, and they get roof rails.
Engine (Power)
There are several engine choices available with the 3 Series. The 320i gets a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 180 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque. The 33i comes with a 2.0-liter with more power that produces 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Both the 328d and 330e have a 2.0-liter turbo engine, but the 328d has a diesel version. The top-of-the-line 341i sedan comes with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo that generates 320 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque.
Performance
With so many engine choices, you can get almost any kind of driving experience you want from the 3 Series. The star performer is the eight-speed automatic. This transmission offers quick and smooth shifting, although the turbo diesel offers excellent fuel economy. With the diesel engine, you can get 36 mpg combined with 31 mpg in the city and 43 mpg on the highway. Choose the 33i for 27 mpg combined with 32 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway when equipped with front-wheel drive.
Interior
The inside of the 3 Series is comfortable with controls that are easy to access and use. There is an abundance of headroom and legroom for both the front and rear seat passengers, and there are high-quality materials throughout. A 6.5-inch display is standard, and you'll also get Bluetooth connectivity and the iDrive infotainment system from BMW. In the trunk of the sedan, there are 15.8 cubic feet of cargo space, while the wagon offers 53 cubic feet of space with the seats folded down.
Safety Features
The 3 Series performs very well in crash tests, and there are many driver assist features available as options to add as a single add-on or as part of a package. You can add a rearview camera to any of the trims, or you can add the Driver Assistance package that bundles the rearview camera with blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and a forward collision warning system that comes with automatic emergency braking.
