Setting the stage!

When it comes to the BMW iX3, an all-electric SUV and part of the automaker’s i electric sub-brand planned for 2026, the significance is surely not lost! This vehicle is truly front and center and setting the stage. It features cylindrical battery cells and represents a new design language as well as an advanced iteration of the iDrive system. Offering a peek into BMW’s near-term electric automotive strategy, the iX3, with codename NA5, will hit the U.S. market by 2026, with other markets receiving their units in 2025. The news is exciting, with this vehicle a clear departure from its predecessor.

Here’s more…

What we know so far!

The iX3 is set to begin production in July, 2025, at the BMW Debrecen Plant in Hungary, concluding by the fall of 2033. This model will be based on the dedicated EV platform, unlike its predecessor which utilized the CLAR platform similar to existing X3 models.

When it comes to the battery, there is also a distinct change with the shift to Gen6 batteries that feature cylindrical cells and which will increase energy density by more than 20 percent. This is opposed to the current Gen5 prismatic cells. This new battery strategy spans three sizes: the 75 kWh, the 90 kWh and the 105 kWh. These cylindrical batteries, which are designed for SUV applications, will be 120 mm in height with a consistent diameter of 46 mm across different vehicle styles.

The iX3 will offer single or dual-motor setups and a range exceeding 500 miles. In addition, and exciting to say the least, but an M performance model with up to 600 horsepower could also be added to the range in the not-so-distant future.

Charging speeds will experience a clear enhancement by 30 percent due in large part to the incorporation of an 800-volt system. This results in a range extension of 186 miles after a 10-minute charge. Overall driving range is also expected to increase by 30 percent, with a potential maximum range of possibly 373 miles. Bidirectional charging technology is also found here, thus enabling the vehicles to not only recharge their batteries but also to supply electricity back to the power grid or directly to devices.

A 20 percent lower drag coefficient is also experienced here compared to the current CLAR-based iX3.

As part of an initial roll out, the following models, which are anticipated to be lighter than the existing BMW EVs built on the CLAR platform, will be presented: BMW iX3 40, 40 xDrive, 50

xDrive and the M60 xDrive. For these vehicles, power output is expected to range from 275 hp for the entry level iX3 40 to at least 560 hp for the iX3 M60 xDrive. Straightline performance will be impressive to say the least!

Larger in size than the CLAR-based iX3, the 2026 model will be smaller than the X5.

This exciting vehicle is planned to be offered as a 2026 model year in North America, with the rest of the world receiving it as a 2025 model.

Design cues!

A new path when it comes to design begins here, marked by the introduction of the Neue Klasse X Concept, representing the second concept to highlight BMW’s new electric vehicle series. It shares many design features with the BMW Vision Neue Klasse sedan, but also stands on its own in many ways. Specifically, the front fascia will be characterized by sleek, vertically oriented kidney grilles, a throwback to the original Neue Klasse from the 1960s, and surrounded by illumination. This represents a shift from chrome elements.

Two slanted LED lines comprise the daytime running light signature, which is rooted in simplicity. Kidney grilles are integrated within the front light clusters, with the iX3 also featuring a fastback rear and a sloping roofline. Other unique design cues are evident, such as bold creases along the wheel wells extending into the doors, which give the vehicle a distinct appearance. At rear, wide tail lights and pronounced design elements are made clear, as well as a massive bumper, giving the vehicle a grounded, sportive stance.

Inside, a minimalist look is presented, complete with an unusual steering wheel design that has a flat top and bottom with multiple prongs. Minimal physical buttons are realized, with BMW also eliminating the driver’s display and the rotary controller. A central display also appears larger than those found in today’s models.

An engineered head-up display known as Panoramic Vision, a first for the brand, sits at the bottom of the windshield, providing drivers whatever relevant information is needed, and perfectly positioned directly in their line of sight. A customized soundtrack is another bonus, allowing drivers to select from four pre-programmed options including “Calm, Free, Expressive and Agile.” These soundscapes not only enhance the electric driving experience, but cater to individual preferences.

Overall, this vehicle signifies for BMW a notable shift in both technology and design language. It also represents a cutting-edge approach to efficiency, propulsion and an all-new design direction. With notable frontal features, including a sleek panel on the nose and an all-out futuristic look, this vehicle offers a clear glimpse into the future.

Setting the stage for the next-generation user experience that supports a seamless integration of the digital and physical realms and starting at $60,000, the vehicle sits on a platform that is

highly flexible. With bidirectional charging, “Vehicle to Home,” “Vehicle to Grid,” and “Vehicle to Load,” functionality is realized and celebrated.

“Our customers can feed electrical energy stored in the vehicle back into their own house, electrical devices like your e-bike or the public power grid,” BMW CEO Oliver Zipse said. “This lowers electricity costs and helps stabilize networks.”

Major driver satisfaction will surely result from this concept, thanks to quick acceleration and engaging handling, as well as next-level infotainment, driver–assistance features and luxury amenities.

Totally new and ranging upwards of $70,000 depending on the trim and options, the iX3 is undoubtedly setting the stage. Stay tuned for more details as they arise, and reserve yours today!
