‘M’ explained!

When it comes to all things powerful and the epitome of high-performance, vehicles with the label “M” are surely it! But while the “M” badges are linked to supercars, not every badge means the same. While the M badge used to be reserved for high-performance race cars like the M1 supercar and the E30 M3 sports sedan, it now applies to a wider range including the X5 and X6 SUVs. It is important to understand what each badge signifies, what sets them apart and which one is right for you.

Here’s more….

The M Sport!

Mostly cosmetic and considered the lowest rung of the BMW M ladder, the M Sport refers to an accessory package that can be an addition to almost any BMW. That includes luxury models like the 7-Series, 8-Series and X7. Although what is offered within differs depending on the vehicle, at the bare minimum, the M Sport package adds unique touches both inside and out! That ranges from small M badges, a darker exterior and interior trim, larger wheels, a sportier-looking body kit and a special steering wheel. The M Sport package, although it differs from model to model, typically runs between $4,000-$5,000.

The M Performance!

This is taking one rung up the ladder, one greater than the M Sport — with a larger amount of speed! In fact, these vehicles are considered the fastest and most powerful trims available. The badge on the trunk is the easiest way to see this difference. For example, a 330i with the M Sport Package will say simply “330i: but with the M Performance version it will say “M340i” with this vehicle also having a different engine than what is found in the standard car. The standard 3-Series engine, which is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, makes 255 hp. By comparison, the M340i has a 3.0-litre turbocharged six cylinder, resulting in 382 hp. The M Performance version also gets M Sport brakes, M Sport exhaust, larger wheels and sportier tires. In addition, this version comes with selectable driving modes and a standard electronically-controlled locking rear differential. Also, the M Performance will cost more than the M Sport. Versions of the M Performance include the X5, X6, X7 and SUVS, the Z4 convertible and the 8-Series luxury coupe.

The BMW M!

In large part due to its performance modifications, BMW considers its “M” products separate models all their own! As a result, official M vehicles do not have trim designations. An example is that the M3 and the X6 M just have the badges that read “M3” and “X6 M.” It is important to distinguish that, while M Performance cars are mostly designed for street driving, each and every BMW M SUV and vehicle is designed with track racing in mind. To take it one step further, BMW even provides the opportunity for every M model buyer to have training at one of the brand’s M driving schools. This training is due in large part to the extreme power they will have under hood. To that end, the standard BMW M3 uses a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six cylinder that makes 425 hp. Taking that one step further, the M3 Competition makes 444 hp.

These cars are presented with wider, grippier tires as well as unique wheels, well-bolstered sport seats and upgraded brake pad components.

No matter which M distinction you choose, there is no doubt that you will be getting the highest-end BMW that is rooted in power. M means all things linked to performance, speed and power! See which badge suits you best!
