What we know!

Recently, a very heavily updated version of the 2 SSeries Gran Coupe, starting at $41,000, was unveiled, featuring a modernized interior and mightier engines for this front-drive-based sedan. Plans are for it to arrive as a 2025 model. With changes similar to the updated version of the related 1-Series hatchback, the Gran Coupe is sporting a whole new look for sure!

At front, the changes are marked by slimmer headlights, new grille patterns as well as the option of an illuminated grille. There is also a new lower fascia design. The rear is also new, with the taillights, lower fascia and exhaust tips also featuring new designs. Standard on the outside is an M Sport exterior design package, bringing all things sporty to brilliant life!

A look within showcases a modern cabin design, boasting a large display panel that integrates a 10.3-inch digital gauge cluster and 10.7-inch infotainment screen that now is found atop the dash.

A new center console is also found within and featuring additional controls. The Gran Coupe’s infotainment system is powered by Google’s Android operating system, which provides ease of use thanks to a QuickSelect feature that provides quick access to frequently used functions.

There is cool backlit interior trim and heated front seats, as well as a head-up display and massaging front seats.

In the area of mechanics, the focus of the overhaul centered on sharpening the vehicle’s handling via increased body rigidity and revisions to the suspension. Those revisions include new adjustable dampers featuring an additional sleeve, recalibrated anti-roll bars and a 20 percent increase in the caster offset of the front wheels.

For the U.S. market, they will be treated to the 228 and M235 models, with the 228 offered with the choice of front- or all-wheel drive and powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-4 rated at 241 hp. The M35 will come with an all-wheel drive only, as well as a 2.0-liter turbo-4 bumped up to 312 hp. In both cases, the transmission is a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Be assured the 2 Series with the 228 in all-wheel-drive will jump to 60 mph from 0 in about 5.8 seconds, while the M235 needs just 4.7 seconds in that same scenario.

Production of the 2-Series Gran Coupe will take place at BMW’s plant in Leipzig, Germany, with plans to go on sale for the 228 and M235 by March and mid-year respectively. Expect prices to start at $42,775 for the 228 and $50,675 for the M235.

A look back…

When this model was first introduced for the 2020 model year, the 2-series Gran Coupe featured a bulbous shape and front-wheel-drive layouts that were not deemed particularly attractive. In addition, the fact that it cost more than the rear-drive 2-series coupe and the roomier X1 crossover also limited the subcompact sedan’s appeal.

That is why moving forward in its second generation, this vehicle boasts looks that are better than ever before and are more in line with the bigger models. Although none are carbon copies, the 2-series Gran Coupe’s design most closely mirrors the bigger 5er, while the sedan also shares details with the BMW 1-series hatchback no longer sold in the U.S.

Also, compared to its predecessor, the new 2-series Gran Coupe is 0.7 inch longer overall at 179.2 inches, and just as wide as before at 70.9 inches. It is also an inch taller at 56.9 inches.

More fun facts!

The new model is offered in a variety of paint options, including two “Frozen” matte colors including Frozen Portimao Blue and Frozen Pure Grey, with those desiring a racier look given the option to choose a Premium package that unlocks a glossy black-painted roof with certain exterior colors.

A selection of 18- and 19-inch wheels can also be fitted with all-season or high-performance summer tires.

Thanks to a revised chassis, this new model feels more responsive, resulting in an overall improved ride. The updates include a stiffer body structure as well as new suspension components. Every 2-series has standard adaptive dampers, as well as an overhauled brake system. The available M Sport setup has larger 15.2-inch rotors pinched by fixed four-piston calipers and floating single-pot units that squeeze a set of 13.0-inch rear discs.

Planned to go on sale next March, this Gran Coupe is already making appearances across various markets, including the UK, and is quite the looker! An extreme overhaul with heavy updates is for the asking. Reserve yours today!
