Its look!

Bold, with a new design language all its very own, the X3 M50 is simple, fresh and represents an unmistakable departure from the evolutionary designs of the past. BMW has left behind the iconic dual headlights and instead replaced them with two minimalist L-shaped LED bars at the front. The kidney grille remains small compared to the car itself, with its integration of the driver assistant sensors sparking some debate among fans.

From the side is a more coupe-like roofline and large 20-inch wheels, with optional 22-inchers available. This gives the X3 M50 a sleek and sporty stance. At back is an undeniably strong presence, made clear by hints of the larger X5, but with the X3 standing apart with its beautiful tail lights and quad exhaust pipes. These have migrated from full-M models to this M Performance version.

Within, the cabin boasts a technological upgrade over the current model, as well as a bit of contention. Without a doubt, the large curved display, powered by BMW’s iDrive9, takes center stage, but so does the limited use of premium materials and the absence of rear ambient lighting. Add to that the departure of a retractable moonroof, and criticism has followed.

Although plush at first glance, the inside does also include plastic materials, an overuse some estimate, and which serve to detract from what is otherwise a premium look. Its steering wheel with a slightly square shape is appealing, and its infotainment system excellent, chock full of features and apps.

An illuminated interaction bar on the door island is also suspect by many, and perhaps serves to over complicate what were once simple, tactile buttons.

On the up side, several features are worth noting, including the iDrive controller as well as the upgraded seats, perfect for traveling long distances. They provide excellent support and hold you snugly in place. The new M Sport steering wheel is also a crowd pleaser, cool and distinctive, as well as highly functional.

A helping hand!

Driver assistance features are another area the X3 M50 stands out, coming equipped with enhanced emergency braking systems, active lane change and active cruise control with traffic light recognition, among other features. In addition, the Driving Assistance Pro Package brings hands-free driving, but only up to 40 mph, compared to the higher 80 mph limit seen in the X5.

Where it counts!

When it comes to power, the X3 M50 ranks high! So high that the 3.0-liter B58 inline-six engine under hood, now in its third iteration and paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, makes 393 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque. What results is a sprint to 60 mph from 0 in just 4.4 seconds.

Push it hard and see this baby come to life, with impressive power delivery and amazingly smooth shifting. Torque distribution is also excellent, allowing the engine to deliver power almost instantly, with very limited turbo lag.

There is also the presence of an electric motor, capable of adding 18 hp and 148 lb-feet of torque. It actively supports the gasoline engine by reducing emissions and lowering fuel consumption. This brings total power to 208 398 hp and torque to 428 lb-ft. It takes about 4.6 seconds to reach 62 mph, with its top speed 155 mph.

Also a stand out mechanical feature is the new belt-driven EPSapa steering system, with electric power steering belts at its core. They play an extremely important role by transferring torque from the motor to the steering gear, thus providing precise assistance during driving. Allowing for a wider range of steering dynamics, this system has both Comfort and Sport mode.

Ranking high is also the suspension setup within, which offers a wide range of configurations to tailor the driving experience. The X3 M50 comes with a standard suspension, an M Sport suspension and two M adaptive options. This allows today’s drivers to strike the perfect balance between everyday comfort and a desired spirited performance.

Closer to a full-fledged X3 M than ever before, the M50 and its excellent torque distribution provides that perfect balance, offering a dynamic driving experience without sacrificing everyday usability. It is without a doubt one of the best crossovers in BMW’s lineup.

It may look a bit different, but it drives beautifully. Get in the driver’s seat and experience impressive refinement, cabin ambience and a feel that is typical of the leading brand. Stepping up against the Mercedes GLC, Range Rover Velar and Lexus RX, the X3 M50 has its work cut out for it, but surely delivers, hitting the sweet spot. With a new mild-hybrid engine and a refreshing redesign, the X3 M50 has evolved in countless ways. Get behind the wheel, and reserve yours today!
