What we know so far!
It is not yet certain if BMW intends to show an M Performance model or a real M, but regardless, the new arrival – a car for two – will round out its portfolio. Beyond that, they are not hinting much ahead of this reveal.
In what is somewhat of a process of elimination, the only candidate thus far for this new model, which will be a concept, would be the M2 CS. This year, the M3 CS Touring has already been seen, and it’s seemingly too early for the M5 to get the Competition Sport treatment.
In other parts of the lineup, true M derivatives of the compact models are ruled out, with it also highly unlikely that BMW will go above the M35 flavor since the automaker has ruled out front-wheel-drive-based Ms.
In other hints of what it WON’T be, we do know that the new X3 tops out the already available M50, and an X3 M40d successor is not planned. Frankly, a car for two leaves only a few potential models that could underpin it. And, due to the fact that last year’s Skyytop had a ton of hints from the 8 Series, it will be very interesting to see what’s next and what BMW creates based on its current lineup.
Also excluded from the possibilities is the bigger SUVs since those already have M Performance and M flavors. In addition, spy shots of the 7 series show it’s due for a Life Cycle Impulse, so the timing is also not ideal for this to be the new model. Also, the M2 xDrive is not due until next year. And while the 8 Series is worthy of a send off based on the M8, that, too, will not happen as BMW already removed the F92 from the US configurator a couple of months ago.
While a follow-up of the M550i would be great, that, too, is also unlikely, as is a send off for the Z4.
Will it be the long-awaited M2 CS? We just don’t know yet!
What we do know is that the Concorso d’Eleganza has become a venue for BMW to release some spectacular cars. To that end, it was where the 8 Series Concept was unveiled in 2017,
the Concept Touring Coupe in 2023 and the Skytop in 2024. This latest model will be, according to BMW, an “elegantly sporting one–off designed to provide motoring pleasure for two.”
And, due to the fact that the automaker based its previous concepts on production models, we are expecting – and hopeful – they will do the same in this instance.
While details are sparse, the prospect is surely exciting, as nothing says power like the iconic M. From a lineup of performance powerhouses that speak to the all-out thrill of driving, BMW is constantly creating, and this concept is one worth watching – with bated breath!
