“Need for Speed,” BMW 3 GTR

What we know!

This one-seater track machine with a full roll cage and a side exhaust that features a custom boy wrap, this GTR race car version has much to brag about when it comes to appeal! It features such key style cues as a massive rear wing and center lock wheels, as well as bulging arches.

Considered the most recognizable M car in the history of video games, it will be unveiled Jan. 6 in all its real and metal glory, with plans moving forward to publicly display it elsewhere, including possibly at the Goodfood Festival of Speed in July.

This vehicle with its V8 engine is all things cool, and inspired by NFS Most Wanted. Unveiling the restored M3 GTR in an ionic blue and silver color scheme that became the symbol of the 2005 NFS Most Wanted Game, this special edition car is worth the wait.

Its iconic reputation is linked to the game, with nearly 75 percent of all Google searches for the word M3 GTR related to the NFS content.

“Most gamers will remember ‘Need for Speed: Most Wanted from 2005,” BMW wrote in a blog post. “One of the reasons is a very special BMW M model driven in the game by the main antagonist, Clarence Callahan, aka ‘Razor’: a BMW M3 GTR from 2001.”

“Its striking silver-blue design, brute sound, enormous power and role in the game’s plot have left a lasting impression on many gamers.”

A look back!

The history of this storied M3 GTR dates back to the 2000 release of the E46 M3, which was an active participant in various European races, thus securing its popularity. In the U.S. it did not reign supreme, though, as there was competition in the local races from such brands as Porsche and Chevrolet.

In order to take part in competitions, BMW decided to replace the six-cylinder S54 engine with a V8. This allowed for the creation of a special series of cars featuring a lightweight and powerful P60B40 engine, which was used in the race.

But to approve this engine, 100 examples of the car had to be produced, a feat partially accomplished. In the area of accolades, the M3 GTR has won many a race, with those worthy of note including the ALMS GT series in 2001 for the car based on the M3 E46. In fact, the BMW M3 GTR, made by BMW M Motorsport for the American Le Mans Series, won seven out of 10 races, with Jorg Muller in the driver’s seat. He did so with the car that weighs in at 1,100 kg, and boasts a P60B40 V8 engine with a max output of roughly 450 horsepower and a top speed of about 260 km/hour.

Considered the most recognizable and beloved cars in the ‘Need for Speed’ history, the M3 GTR is on display for all to enjoy, but just through January. It’s gettin real! See what this unveiling is all about!
