The news is exciting — BMW will be making its M5 for 2025 a plug-in hybrid! Complete with code name G90 and with promises of top performance and handling, much is to be anticipated with this new-gen M5. With styling similar to BMW’s modern standards of today and hybrid gear from the XM, look closely for this new M5, a thrill seeker with an upgraded powertrain that is soon to be on the horizon.

What’s different!
Heading into 2025 are new touches for what is considered the hottest sedan from the M division!
The new M5 is expected to get its power from not one, but four electric motors and will use a similar drivetrain as the plug-in-hybrid XM Label Red SUV.
It will feature a whole new look, complete with fresh equipment as well as introduce rear-wheel steering, larger brakes and optional 22-inch wheels.
The new M5 has high hopes to go as far as 60 miles in EV mode as long as drivers do not exceed 87 mph.
Power packed!
In borrowing the PHEV powertrain from the Label Red SUV, the new M5 is expected to carry as much as 735 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels. That is the result of BMW’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 gas engine and the M5’s lithium-ion battery pack. This vehicle will also most likely use an eight-speed automatic transmission, with the current gas-only model reaching 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds.
When it comes to the battery of this next-gen plug-in hybrid M5, the size is not yet revealed, but, since it is similar to the powertrain of the XM, it is likely it will also share the 25.7-kWh battery found in BMW’s PHEV SUV. That means an electric-only driving range of 60 miles is expected, with that set up allowing for speeds as high as 87 mph. It is also anticipated that recharging the battery to full power will take just over three hours.
A peak inside/out!
Touches such as heated and ventilated seats are among the interior design elements, as well as customizable lighting and gesture control of infotainment. It is also important to note that some space will be sacrificed for the additional battery and electric motor.
Sporty touches found within include heavier-bolstered seats, aluminum pedals, dark headliner and illuminated scuff plates, as well as additional BMW M emblems and carbon-fiber bits.
Also inside, the M5 is expected to feature BMW’s latest and greatest iDrive 8 software on an enormous curved display that spans across two-thirds of the dashboard. Wireless Apple
CarPlay and Android Auto are likely standard, with added perks like wireless smartphone charging, Sirius XM satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hotspots and premium auto system expected.
This sedan will also represent the return of the estate body style, subtle yet luxurious. At the front, a large and complex lower bumper intake is flanked by two smaller, inlets on the sides as well as a slightly revised grille complete with the traditional M emblem. Changes to the headlights may also be on tap, similar to what was done with the entry-level M2.
Traditional quad tailpipes round out the rear and will most likely be combined with a prominent diffuser and a lip spoiler.
While BMW is not making its M5 all-electric at this point, it is adding a large boost of plug-in hybrid power, and the news couldn’t be more exciting!
