Delicious Cheeseburger | Dave Walter BMW | Akron, OHOhio is home to many interesting cities, but perhaps one of the most interesting is Akron. The one thing most people know about Akron is that it is the hometown of NBA star LeBron James, but there is so much more to this city than just being home to an NBA champion.

If you’ve never visited Akron before, or are a resident who would like to learn a little more about your home, it’s time to learn about some of the things that this city is known for.

Akron Leads in Education

The majority of people in America attended public school at some point in their lives. However, few are aware that the public education system as we know exists entirely because of Akron. The K-12 school system that is used across the United States today was first established in Akron in 1847. From there, it expanded until it was the predominant form of education in the nation.

In addition, Akron was also the first city in the country that used a superintendent of schools, which is now a common position in school systems throughout America.

Akron is Committed to Nature

While many cities across the country profess a commitment to nature, Akron is a community that actually follows through, and has even won multiple awards for its dedication.

For example, the National Arbor Day Foundation has honored Akron with its “Tree City” designation 17 times, proving the city’s focus on preserving and promoting natural beauty. In addition, Akron is home to the only national park in Ohio, Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Finally, the Grizzly Ridge exhibit at the Akron Zoo has been recognized as one of the best of its kind, thanks to its creative design and creature comforts that the bears can take advantage of.

Innovation in Akron

A surprising fact about Akron is its long history of innovation. While most people are aware that Akron is the home of two of the country’s first tire manufacturers, BFGoodrich and Goodyear, few are aware that Akron was in the forefront of police technology at the turn of the 19th century.

In 1899, the Akron Police Department debuted the first police car to ever be used, which at the time was considered to be one of the most exciting developments in law enforcement. The APD also tested a firearm that could shoot around corners, but it failed to gain the same popularity as the invention of the police car.

Akron Food

Like most cities, Akron cares deeply about its food, and nothing speaks to this quite like the National Hamburger Festival, which was invented right in the city of Akron. Taking place every July, the festival attracts hundreds of visitors and residents who can’t get enough of this treat. Typical events at the Hamburger Festival include an eating contest and a Miss Hamburger pageant. You can even try out some original recipes.
