When you think of Akron, you probably don’t think about innovative food products that we still eat today. However, thanks to Akron inventor Charles E. Menches, we have popular foods like hamburgers, ice cream cones, and caramel corn.
In addition to being home to several food firsts, Akron was the founding place of the first mass-production toy company in the United States, the Akron Toy Company. Unlike modern toy companies, the only toy it produced was clay marbles.
Facts About the University of Akron
Despite Akron’s small size compared to other Ohio cities, the city is home to The University of Akron. The most interesting fact about The University of Akron is the nickname used by its athletic programs: The Zips. While you might think this name refers to the speed of Akron’s athletes, the name actually comes from a rubber shoe that was once produced by BFGoodrich, which was founded in Akron. Instead of a shoe, however, the university’s actual mascot is a kangaroo. The University of Akron is also the only school in the country to offer a degree in Corrosion Engineering.
Akron Is Home to Many Celebrities
Some very famous people call Akron home, making this a city with deep ties to the entertainment and sports worlds. The best-known Akron celebrity is NBA star LeBron James, who was born and raised in Akron. He has won NBA titles with both the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers.
Akron is also the home of several notable musicians. Two members of the rock group The Black Keys are from Akron, as are the members of the group Devo.
Companies From Akron
As previously mentioned, Akron was the founding place of BFGoodrich, one of the country’s first tire manufacturers. Interestingly, it was also the founding location of one of America’s other most-recognizable tire brand, Goodyear. Akron is also the former home of Firestone Tires. The company was moved to Chicago after it was sold to a new owner.
Soap Box Derby
Another interesting fact about Akron is that it has been home to the Soap Box Derby since 1934. Every year, parents and children from around the country journey to Akron to test their Soap Box Derby cars head-to-head. The event is so competitive that it has even led to numerous cheating scandals!
