Re-imagining realized!

Change is truly in the air when it comes to the full redesign of the 2024 BMW X5, with the iconic vehicle receiving a facelift and strong visual revisions. From a new interior to electrified engines and more, this refreshed BMW is worth its weight in gold! Changes to the interior as well as an altered front fascia make quite the difference when comparing it to past generations, with these substantial revisions carrying a personality all their own. See how this iconic vehicle has evolved!

Here’s more…

Power packed!

Under hood is where some of the substantial changes are made clear for the 2024 model year, with three powertrains available for the X5. For the vehicles with the 40i designation, they will come equipped with either rear-wheel-drive (sDrive) or all-wheel-drive (xDrive), utilizing a redesigned turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine. This new engine cranks out 375 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque, quite a large increase from the previous year’s model by 40 hp and 51 lb-ft for the six cylinder. The X5 also boasts an updated mild hybrid system that aids in smoothing out the engine’s stop-start function and enhances acceleration and fuel efficiency.

Those models that are presented with the turbocharged V8 are badged as M60, with all-wheel drive standard. This newly developed 4.4-liter V8 cranks out a spectacular 523 hp and 553 lb-ft and receives the new mild hybrid system for the first time. The motor is paired into an eight-speed transmission.

Where most of the changes occur under hood is within the new xDrive50e, with the “e” in last year’s model representative of the model’s plug-in hybrid powertrain. With the new 2024 model, a heavily revised turbocharged 3.0-liter straight six is realized, along with a more powerful electric motor. This combo gives forth an output of 483 hp and 516 lb-ft, a huge boost over last year.

What else is new under hood? A larger battery for the plug-in hybrid xDrive50e, which is a 25.7-kWh lithium-on. This allows the vehicle the ability to drive nearly 40 miles on a single charge, which is an increase of about 10 miles over the outgoing model. Home charging speeds also get a hefty boost, thanks to a new charging unit, with a maximum of 7.5 kW.

Lastly, M60 versions are presented with four-wheel steering, which helps navigate those tight spots in parking lots and provide stability at highway speeds.

What’s inside/out?

Visually is where the X5 has changed the most, beginning with entirely new headlights, which are presented thinner and more sporty looking, as well as new arrow-shaped lights within. Grilles are not changed much, with the exception of the fact that they are not illuminated this model year. And, depending on whether the X5 has the M Sport Package or not, it can come equipped with M-specific design upgrades, glossy black roof rails and a Shadowline trim. In back, the vehicle is presented with a trapezoidal exhaust finisher and a dark apron inlay. Also,

headlights are darkened and the M Sport brakes come with either blue or red calipers. An optional package also includes M Sport exhaust.

New metallic hues mark changes to the exterior, with choices including Marina Bay Blue metallic, Blue Ridge Mountain, Brooklyn Grey, Skyscraper Grey and Frozen Pure Grey.

On the inside, a large pane of glass marks one of the key interior changes for 2024, utilized to house both the 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and the 14.9-inch center-mounted infotainment screen. More controls are now integrated into the digital interface, resulting in a lack of clutter. Also, re-profiled air vents nearly disappear in this newly redesigned dash. Overall, the X5 looks better inside, thanks to the dual curved iDrive8screen, sharp-looking wood trim and a cool dashboard light bar.

The X5s controller within is surrounded by a mix of traditional and virtual touch-sensitive buttons for functions like the parking brake, drive modes and the optional two-axle air suspension. The gear selector is newly designed for this model year and can be optioned in glass.

No longer will the optional third-row seat be available for the X5 this model year, which may or may not affect today’s buyer.

Tech alert!

A faster and more flexible system is found behind the X5’s new digital screens, with the Operating System 8 allowing for increased connectivity and a more smartphone-centered menu structure. Also new and quite “techy” is the augmented reality functionality for the navigation system. This allows for more precise turn-by-turn directions, key when drivers are attempting to navigate unfamiliar areas or tricky intersections.

Also in the area of technology is a new digital key for both Apple and Android phone users, an orchestrated entry lighting display, automated parking controllable from either side or outside of the vehicle and a new semi-automated hands-free driving system. This is capable of speeds of upwards of 85 mph on some highways.

Option up!

While options for the most part remain unchanged from the previous model year, a new addition is the M Sport Professional Package, which adds more aggressive additions such as black chrome tailpipes and painted brake calipers to the M Sport vehicles. New this year and after a one-year hiatus is the Gesture Control package, as well as glass controls and massaging seats. Also two-axle air suspension returns in the 2024 model year.

Its cost!

Cost has increased heading into 2024, with the X5 xDrive40i climbing from $63,900 to $67,500 and the sDrive40i starts at $65,200. Also, the X5 xDrive M60i begins at $89,300 — which is an increase from $85,400 and $89,100.

With production kicking off for the 2024 BMW X5 SUV this month at the plant in Spartanburg, S.C., this vehicle and its changes are something to see and experience!
