Path to a new generation!

With what is already BMW’s most popular compact crossover comes a next-generation, with a model poised to catch the world by storm in 2025. Identified by the chassis code G45 and expected to be unveiled by mid summer in 2024, this vehicle will represent the X3’s fourth generation, and boast substantial updates in both design and technology. From new exterior style to advances in technology, the X3, which will begin production at the Spartanburg Plant this fall, is all that and so much more! See what’s in store!

What we know!

Built on the flexible CLAR architecture, the G45 X3 will come with some meaningful upgrades, especially on the outside, including a cleaner and sleeker body design complemented by more elaborate lighting elements. An overall fresh look is expected courtesy of brand-new headlights and a revised kidney grille. These headlights are similar to the design found on the latest BMW 5 Series, X1 and X2 models, with the double LEDs forming an L-shape tucked inside sleek glass housing. Considered an icon in design, the kidney grille will hold true to its classic dimensions, avoiding the larger grille trend. The taillights on the all-new X3 will feature two parallel light bars which extend into the trunk with an X motif wrapping around the fenders. The new lights incorporate signatures in the shape of a capital “Y” sitting on its side and undoubtedly make a statement!

The exterior of the X3, presented with fewer creases and less dramatic lines, is also marked with a roof spoiler and tailgate, similar to those found on many crossovers. Door handles are also flush, which is a trend of many of the German automaker’s models.

Inside, design remains true to the current language, including a large curved display, common in other BMWs, and powered by iDrive 9 in the G45 X3. The infotainment system uses the Android Automotive OS.

Also within, a traditional gear shift knob will instead be a toggle switch, with the iDrive knob dial remaining. The steering wheel for the 2025 model will also remain the same as the 5 Series and i5 models, with its flat-bottom design. No other major updates are found within.

When it comes to power, the X3 for 2025 is expected to include numerous powertrains, from the X3 20, X3 20d or X3 30 for gasoline models and X3 30e for plug-in hybrids. A diesel X3 40d is also planned.

Considered a “top model” will be the X3 M50, sans the “i” denotation which used to stand for fuel-injected engines. Now, the letter is a sole indicator for electric BMWs, similar to current models. The M Performance model or the X3 M50, will use the B58 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine making 382 hp, paired with a mild-hybrid system. In contrast, the upcoming iX3 all-electric model is expected to transition to BMW’s “Neue Klasse,” or new class, platform.

A look back/ahead…

The current X3 arrived in 2017 for the 2018 model year and given an update in 2022. Like the tradition, the redesigned X3 will arrive this year as a 2025 model. That will be followed by a resigned version of the X4 a year or more later and possibly exclusively as an electric vehicle.

While many of the design elements are similar to past generations, a more rounded vehicle is planned for this next model, with the grille taking on a taller design. While the iX3 uses a modified version of the CLAR platform, the next electric X3, which sits on a dedicated EV platform, will bring forth its first model next year. It will be followed by an SUV.

Production of the redesigned X3 will be done at the BMW Group’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where the current X3 is built. On the heels of what is already an extremely successful model, the X3 will continue that formula, with the company selling more than 63,000 models in the U.S. alone in 2023. That translates into it being the automaker’s second-most popular vehicle after the X5.

Everything we know about this new model is just enough to pique our interest in what will be a fantastic next-generation vehicle. From exterior upgrades rooted in style and leading technology, the path to a new generation is one to certainly follow. Reserve yours today!
