The mighty shields!

BMW has you covered — literally. In fact, when it comes to the benefits to be realized upon the unveiling of a new generation of protection vehicles for BMW in the luxury sedan segment, there are far too many to count! From trail-blazing as the automaker’s first-ever protection sedan with an all-electric drive system to an integrated security concept and self-supporting body structure made of armor steel, the two models represent outstanding levels of ride comfort and class-leading power. Most importantly, though, both armored sedans can withstand attacks from firearms and explosives, giving that mighty shield of protection through and through!

Here’s more….

How they’re developed!

Two models were developed as the basis of the new BMW 7 Series, and represent a combination of the protection concept with the highest levels of ride comfort and roominess. Add to that advanced equipment and all-out power, and this first Protection is all things remarkable.

It is powered by two tough-as-nails electric motors and meets all the necessary requirements of class VR9 protection minus any limitations. This is also the case for the new combustion-engine in the BMW 7 Series Protection.

These models are rooted in the new BMW Protection Core, which is not only unique the world over, but is comprised of model-specific self-supporting body structure made of armor steel. Add to this key features even more armoring for the underbody and roof and also armored glass, and these are truly one-of-a-kind.

Both models, built in an outstanding “craft manufacturing” process, will soon make their public debut with deliveries by year’s end!

How they protect!

These new models are unique in that they offer customized protection from attacks with firearms or explosives for at-risk individuals. Classified as offering class VR9 protection based on the internationally recognized official test criteria set forth by Germany’s Vereingung, the certification is based on guidelines for Bullet Resistant Vehicles. Even the glass on these models serves as a protection against fire.

The first all-electric model in the protection category, these vehicles are offered exclusively in Europe and serve as a prime example that all of these benefits in terms of safety can be coupled expertly with sustainability. To this end, BMW is once again at the forefront, pioneering the field of locally emission-free mobility for individuals requiring special protection.

They represent a mix of traditional know-how with true cutting-edge technology. This is rooted in more than four decades of experience in the development and production of protection vehicles.

The entire sedan’s body constructed from armor steel for the first time boasts three-dimensionally engineered elements all made of exceptionally resistant, hot-formed steel alloys. The way it works is that the BMW Protection Core forms a self-supporting protective cell, combined with protection-spec doors, armoring the underbody and safety glass.

With the protection even at the roof and underbody for these sedans, it serves to keep occupants safe from drone attacks with explosive charges and from fragments that may be dispersed by hand grenades upon detonation.

In all, the BMW 7 Series Protection is VPAM VR9 ballistics certified for up to 7.62×511 mm ammunition, which means anything with a velocity of 2,690 feet per second should not puncture the armored passenger compartment. The 7 Series also passes the key PAS 300 blast resistance testing, providing that additional peace of mind.

Added touches!

On top of all of the ways the protection vehicles serve to benefit and keep secure today’s driver, the vehicles also feature a self-sealing fuel tank with special casing that enables it to seal itself after being hit by a stray bullet so as to prevent any loss of fuel.

The vehicles are covered also by a certification set forth from an independent state testing institute where experts conduct firearms and explosive tests on the vehicle. This results in an additional layer of protection.

How they appear!

There are just a few indications from the outside that the new i7 Protection and BMW 7 Series Protection stand out from regular sedans with the M Sport package. Thanks to a discreet and largely inconspicuous appearance, occupants requiring protection are covered.

The design of these vehicles speak to spaciousness within, with roominess and seating comfort in the front and rear similar to those found in a conventional 7 Series sedan. Weight is also optimized so as to allow for a higher load-carrying capacity than its predecessors, and also speaks to superb handing. Totally agile with precise handling and control, these vehicles also boast excellent cornering dynamics and outstanding figures when it comes to acceleration and top speed.

A broad range of options are available for making the exterior and interior of these vehicles your own. Presented as an option alongside the standard illuminated BMW kidney Iconic Glow are the crystal headlights Iconic Glow. As for colors, the two new Protection models can share all of the colors available across the 7 Series range. Despite this color choice, a low-profile presence in public areas are the end goal with these models.

Inside, adapt your vehicle to your personal needs and desires. From multifunction seats and BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery to heated and ventilated seats for front and back passengers alike, the inside is rooted in comfort. Options include a massage function for all seats as well as an Executive Lounge.

How they’re powered!

A choice of powertrains if found here, with the locally emission-free powertrain on board the BMW i7 Protection comprised of one electric motor at the front axle and another at the rear. Numerous components from the brand’s most powerful all-electric production models are utilized resulting in extreme performance. Together, the two electric motors create an electric all-wheel-drive system with a combined output of 400 kW/544 hp and a maximum combined torque of 549 lb.-ft.

Instantaneous power is delivered to all four wheels with the new BMW i7 Protection jumping to 62 mph in just 9.0 seconds and reaching top speed of 99 mph.

The 7 Series Protection comes equipped with the mild-hybrid turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine producing 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque and exclusively matched to the xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Less powerful than the i7 Protection, the ICE-powered model accelerates to 62 mph in 6.6 seconds and reaches top speeds of 130 mph.

How they’re unique!

These two new models hold the proud tittle of being the first and only protection vehicles in their segments to be fitted with Integral Active Steering. This type of rear-wheel steering functionality serves to reduce the car’s turning circle when maneuvering as well as increase precision and the dynamic response through those fast-taken corners. This type of steering also enhances the drive comfort of rear-seat passengers.

These vehicles sit on 20-inch light alloy wheels, which serve to enable a powerful braking system. The tires and their large diameter and high volume of air speak to stability and ride comfort.

How they lend a hand!

Driver assistance with information and warning functions aligns with the mission of the Protection vehicles, with the i7 and 7 Seres equipped with a wide array of helpful systems. With tech thats functionality is focused on supporting professional chauffeurs with information and warnings, these systems do not actively intervene to support the vehicles. Instead, highly advanced sensors and cameras are fitted specifically to the protection vehicles. They serve to provide both precise and detailed information on the area around the vehicle and in all situations. They are equipped with such functions as Lane Departure Warning, Crossroads Warning, Speed Limit Info systems and much more.

As you navigate situations where visibility may not be ideal and in low ambient temps, an electric heating function is standard for both the windscreen and the front sections of the site windows. Optional is model-specific pre-heating.

Another exclusive feature of these vehicles are motorized assistance for opening and closing the doors, a standard, but key, feature. In addition, occupants have the ability to close the doors automatically at just the touch of a button after entering.

Electrically operated roller unblinds for windows on both sides are another benefit in the i7 Protection and the new 7 Series.

How they connect!

Both the new i7 Protection and new BMW 7 Series Protection come equipped with the latest generation of iDrive based on BMW Operating System 8.5. Intuitive to use and familiar to BMW drivers, all of the important information that needs accessed will be achieved via the BMW Curved Display, positioned purposefully in the driver’s direct line of sight.

Most importantly, all of the relevant functions that serve to protect the vehicle’s occupants can be activated and controlled in full using the touchscreen capability of the control display.

As their names make clear, the new i7 and 7 Series Protection are vehicles that truly have you covered. In addition to their numerous benefits, they also provide top ride comfort, handling capabilities and leading technology. They are the mighty shields in every sense of the word!
