Sibling rivalry!
Come next spring, the second-generation X2, a sporty coupe-like SUV, returns and is equipped with not only an interesting look thanks to a new design but will also come in two versions, the xDrive 28i or the M35i xDrive, both with an inline four-cylinder engine. Considered a sibling of the X1 yet a sportier and less practical version of that model, this all-new crossover has a unique appearance that is all its own. Drivers get set for its 2024 arrival!

Its look!
With a conventional design all its own, the X2 boasts a chiseled, tallish look, with its M35i distinguished by a unique grille design and four exhaust tips, one for each cylinder.
It is defined by a wide and purposeful C-pillar, a sharply sloped tailgate and character lines that hint at a three box-like shape. Angular headlights and a fascia chock-full of sharp angles and harsh creases gives it a more contemporary look, with the option of an illuminated kidney grille available. Clever sculpting rounds out the rear with scalloped taillights positioned above a strong horizontal crease that tumbles inward before puffing outward into what is a muscular rear bumper with quad tailpipes.
By proportion, this new X2 is 2.6 inches longer than the X1 and its wheelbase is also slightly larger, growing by just under an inch to 106 inches total. This increase results in more cargo room, jumping from 50.1 cubic feet to 51.7.
Standard wheel sizes are 19 and 20 inches for the two version, with BMW offering optional 21-inch wheels on the X2 for the first time.
Its look within mirrors its sister model X1, with a curved display and gauge-cluster graphics that present the speedo and tach in the form of an angle, which is considered somewhat controversial. A modern dashboard features the infotainment and BMW Curved Display instrument panel both behind a single pane of curved glass. Optional within is a panoramic sunroof, and driver and passengers alike enjoy the roomy cargo area that measures 25 cubic feet.
Seats come standard with vinyl and what is termed animal-free Veganza, and the seats and dashboard are adorned with Alcantara. Color options include Black, Mocha or Oyster as well as two-toned Red/Black or Atlas Grey/Smoke White.
Its power!
The X2 is powered by two turbo fours. In specific, the X2 xDrive 28i gets its power from a 241-hp 2.0-liter four, and the X2 M35i x Drive is equipped with a 312-hp variation of the same power plant. Torque is the same with each at 295 lb-ft, yet comes in lower revs with the entry-level model. The jump from 0-60 mph takes 6.2 and 5.2 seconds respectively and topside is at 149 or 155 mph.
Both of the models are presented with all-wheel-drive as standard as well as with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Its connections!
When it comes to connectivity, the X2 surely delivers. It comes with a vast array of driver-assistance systems, as well as in-car video games from gaming platform AirConsole. There are the usual driving modes to choose from as well as Relax, Expressive and Digital Art modes. An Efficiency Trainer can provide instruction to drivers to take it more slowly, while an interior camera can take photos and record videos.
The vehicle’s instrument panel runs on the Android-based Operating System 9, fully modern and digitalized, with the 10.25 inch infotainment display running iDrive 9. Occupants also enjoy BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assist service featuring enhanced natural speech recognition and proactively response to user behavior.
Within the X2 is also the first-ever optional Driving Assistant Professional driver assistance system which uses cameras and radar to augment the vehicle’s cruise control system.
Enhanced Parking Assistant Plus offers more help getting in and out of parallel or perpendicular spots. In addition, this system has within it Drive Recorder which functions as a built-in dash cam that can record up to 60 seconds of footage during an accident.
Its M features!
An M sport package can be fitted to the xDrive 28i, which boasts large side intakes on the front bumper, side skirts, a Shadowline exterior trim and rear diffuser. This package is also marked by 19-inch M alloy wheels, with an option to upgrade to 20 or 21 inch, sport seats, Alcantara on the instrument panel, an anthracite-colored headliner and M leather steering wheel with shift paddles.
This upgrade will also result in black mirrors, M Sport brakes with red calipers, M Shadowline headlights, a rear spoiled and more Shadowline bits outside. Going Pro with the M35i brings red or blue M Sport calipers or optional M Compound brakes in grey, M Shadowline headlights, unique M Sport seats and more Shadowline trim on the exterior. There is also the option of a dark-tinted panoramic sunroof.
The X2’s handling is also notable and due to the continued refinement of the chassis. The X2’s front suspension has been entirely redone, with a benefit of a reduction of torque steer. There is also an improved caster for additional stability in a straight line. The front suspension also realizes improved dampers that will serve to reduce body movement over small road imperfections without affecting handling.
