When it comes to BMW’s decision to stick with combustion engines, CEO Oliver Zipse is speaking up and speaking out! His message is clear — “we don’t want to write off the combustion engine” — and his announcement comes during an era when many automakers are clamoring to announce their clear end. BMW — not so much! Breaking the trend!

Want to get back to your first drive? BMW has you covered! With the Z4 M40i for 2024, the manual transmission is back and better than ever! Not only is this move fulfilling many a driver’s wish, but it is a likely path in light of a recent boom when it comes to sales of manual transmissions in the U.S. And by boom, there have been nearly double the sales, representing a rise from 0.9 percent of new cars solid in 2021 to 1.7 percent thus far in 2023.

Leading the pack

There’s no doubt about it that the BMW M240 is a special car when it comes to the compact segment and that is due in large part to its inline-six engine under roof. To put that engine to the test, “Sports Auto” decided to put it up against the Toyota GR Supra, with its smaller BMW 2.0-liter unit “B48” engine, and the Volkswagen Golf R, a hot hatch with all-wheel drive.
